According to internal sources, “before his death, the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was confined at 108 Military Hospital with To Lam’s strict guard team. Anyone who wants to meet Trong must go through the approval of this monitoring team, all exchanges with Trong are eavesdropped by To Lam’s people and reports are sent to the Ministry of Public Security. ”
Another source added that ” late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong should not have died, but To Lam seemed too impatient when the opportunity was near, so he ordered to remove medical equipment supports for Trong.”
Black files on other Politburo members, the Secretariat and the Four Pillars of the regime were also quickly established by the Ministry of Public Security to investigate the violations of these high-ranking officials, such as National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, State President Vo Van Thuong, Standing Secretary of the Secretariat Truong Thi Mai, etc. In the end, Lam’s goal was to eliminate them with vague reasons so that he could gain full control of the game in the Party. Immediately after that, Lam’s fellows Hung Yen were favored and received important positions in the Party and State such as: Minister of Public Security Luong Tam Quang, Chairman of the Central Committee’s Commission for Inspection Nguyen Duy Ngoc without anyone daring to publicly object. The Army itself has quite a number of Central Party and Politburo members, but because they are too weak and “tainted” so they have to stay silent. To the point that many high-ranking officials have to exclaim that “Now the Politburo meeting is like attending a meeting of the Hung Yen fellow countrymen.”
